U3A Exploring @ Frensham

Frensham Little Pond, Friday 4 November 2022

After a few rather wet days the sun came out for us and we had a lovely walk. As well as all the fungi we also saw some rather late-flowering plants and a few birds including a raven.

Probably the most interesting find, however, was a small, rather insignificant club fungus growing on a fallen Birch branch; Typhula fistulosa var contorta, rejoices in the English name ‘Contorted Pipe Club’ and is less common than its close relative the Pipe Club which grows on soil and woody debris.
