Kingdom Animalia

The animal kingdom used to be further separated into vertebrates and invertebrates, with the vertebrates only containing one phylum with five classes containing birds, frogs & lizards, reptiles, mammals and fish.

However, things are no longer so clear cut. ITIS, for example, separates Animalia into 2 subkingdoms, with further infrakingdoms and superphyla. However, most lists I have come across just use phyla (with some classes listed separately as they do not fit, although the list of phyla does seem to vary depending on the source.

Here is a list of combined Phyla listings from National Biodiversity Network (NBN Atlas)1, iNaturalist2, Catalogue of Life (CoL)3, and Barcode of Life Dataset (BOLD):

Sources

  1. NBN is a UK charity in collaboration with many wildlife conservation organisations, with mainly UK, but also some European, listings. Observations accepted in iRecords are fed through to NBN. NBN is also the UK node for GBIF
  2. iNaturalist is a worldwide citizen science observation portal. Research Grade observations are also listed on GBIF
  3. CoL is a global species database with information fed in from numerous sources. GBIF use this as their backbone structure. Species 2000 is part of the same system.
  4. BOLD – contains a list of all species that have been given a barcode.
  5. GBIF, the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, is funded by many world governments and various wildlife organisations.
  6. ITIS, the Integrated Taxonomic Information System, is also associated with CoL and GBIF

Although these organisations are separate entities they are also linked in various ways.
