Section 9E – Core Passerida: Sylvioid & Muscicapoid Songbirds

Order Passeriformes (Perching Birds)

Warbler- and thrush-like songbirds: warblers, babblers, wrens, thrushes & starlings

This subsection covers the central part of the Passerida, a large group of small to medium-sized songbirds that dominate Eurasia, Africa, and many other regions. It begins with fairy-flycatchers, tits, larks and swallows, then moves through the major Old World warbler and babbler groups, including cisticolas, reed warblers, leaf warblers, bulbuls, parrotbills and white-eyes. The sequence continues through laughingthrushes, waxwings, nuthatches, treecreepers and wrens, before concluding with mockingbirds, starlings, dippers, thrushes and the Old World flycatchers.

These birds occupy a wide range of habitats, from open-country grasslands and wetlands to forests and gardens, and include many of the most familiar and accomplished songbirds.
